Charles E. Lindblom Memorial Fellowship

Organization:
College and University Fund for the Social Sciences

Overview:
The Charles E. Lindblom Memorial Fellowship supports an interdisciplinary social science project by an advanced graduate student at a member institution of the College and University Fund for the Social Sciences. One fellowship of $7,500 will be awarded to a doctoral candidate pursuing original and interdisciplinary research in economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, and/or history.

Background:
Charles E. Lindblom (1917–2018), Sterling Professor of Political Science and Economics at Yale University, was a pioneering scholar in social sciences. He helped found the Institution for Social and Policy Studies at Yale and served as its director from 1974–1980. The fellowship honors his legacy and the impact he had on scholars he mentored. This fellowship is made possible by a generous donation from Dr. T.Y. Shen.

2026 Competition Theme:
Evaluating Interventions to Reduce Inequality

  • Applicants must propose projects evaluating the efficacy of interventions aimed at reducing inequality globally, by public, nonprofit, or private organizations.

  • Projects should be designed to produce an article-length paper within one year of the award.

  • The successful project will be featured in the SSRC’s digital forum Items: Insights from the Social Sciences.

Application Requirements:

  • Proposal describing the project (max. 5 pages including bibliography)

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Applicants should:

  1. Clearly identify the intervention central to their research and describe how they will study its impact on inequality.

  2. Include a strategy for disseminating an article-length paper within one year of the award.

Eligibility:

  • Open exclusively to PhD candidates at member institutions of the College and University Fund for the Social Sciences.

  • Applicants must have completed all PhD requirements except the dissertation at the time of application.
