The PIBBSS Summer Fellowship is a 3-month interdisciplinary program connecting researchers with AI safety mentors. Fellows work on projects at the intersection of their expertise and AI safety, with guidance from mentors tailored to their experience and goals.
This program is designed for researchers seeking to transition into AI safety and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration across fields like neuroscience, physics, philosophy, law, ecology, linguistics, and social sciences.
Pre-program Reading Group: 8-week remote preparation on AI risks (April–May)
Opening & Closing Retreats: Multi-day cohort retreats with AI safety researchers
Full-Time Research: 3 months of dedicated research with mentorship
Community & Networking: Shared office space, talks, and community events
Final Symposium: Present your research in September
Financial Support: Stipend, housing allowance, meals, travel costs, short-term visa support
Supported by the Cooperative AI Foundation, up to 6 fellows focus on improving cooperative intelligence of AI systems, including:
Evaluating cooperation-relevant capabilities
Studying multi-agent interactions and emergent behaviors
Addressing information asymmetries and transparency
Conducting fundamental research on cooperation in complex systems
Applicants from game theory, multi-agent systems, behavioral economics, organizational psychology, political science, anthropology, biology, and network science are especially encouraged.
Researchers motivated to contribute to AI safety
Relevant fields: mathematics, neuroscience, physics, philosophy, law, ecology, linguistics, political/economic/social theory, media studies
Applicants with substantial research experience are welcome, even without PhD credentials
Open to all countries
Written Application: CV, personal statement (600–800 words), optional work samples
Interviews & Project Development: Multiple rounds to discuss research interests, develop project proposals, and match with mentors
